Consumer Law (Maryland and Washington, DC)

Consumer Protection Laws such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and various state consumer protection laws are designed to prevent businesses from engaging in fraud or unfair practices and from gaining an unfair advantage over consumers.

Identity Theft

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America . It has become an epidemic, leaving everyone at risk, including children, adults, the elderly, those with good credit, bad credit, or no credit. And, to make matters worse, most people do not know if their identity has been stolen.

Despite your best efforts to manage the flow of your personal information, skilled identity thieves can use a variety of methods to gain access to your personal information.

Credit Report Errors

Lenders, insurance companies and even potential employers increasingly are turning to credit reports to determine what kind of rates you should pay and if you should be hired for a job.

A recent study conducted by the National Association of State Public Interest Research Groups (2004) found that 79% of all credit reports contain some type of error and up to 25% contain errors which could result in credit denials, increased interest rates, and lost employment opportunities.

Before you become a victim of inaccurate information in your credit report, let us help you navigate the complex process of correcting those errors.

Debt Related Issues

Dealing with a debt collector can be one of the most stressful experiences of your life. A debt collector will sometimes make harassing calls, threats, use obscene language, embarrass you by contacting your employer, family or neighbors or sue you.

Some of the debt realted issues we routinely handle involve:

  • Debt collection abuse/harassment
  • Unfair and Deceptive debt collection
  • Debt negotiation with creditors

Debtors are protected by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), the Maryland Consumer Debt Collection Act, and the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Laws. Each of these laws sets out what debt collectors can do and what they cannot do, and it gives certain rights to debtors
